Fire Safety Preparedness

When it comes to severe weather and natural disasters, timing can be an issue. Since Mother Nature waits for no one, being prepared for any situation is vital in keeping you and your loved ones safe. In the blink of an eye, a fire can start and spread within minutes, even seconds. Fires born in nature can spread quickly to residential areas, as fires started in a home can be detrimental in minutes.

Taking preventative action by preparing yourself and your family for a fire can greatly benefit you. According to American Red Cross, creating fire safety habits is the first step in being prepared against fires.

Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Some important items to keep up with when it comes to fire safety preparedness are alarms: starting with your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These alarms will be one of the first signs of danger within your home. Keeping up with these by checking their batteries and proper installation are vital in staying safe from fire danger within the home.

Having smoke detectors within each level of your house ensures that a fire started on the second floor will also be detected on the second floor. It is also important to keep your carbon monoxide detectors in more central locations of the house, while also always near sleeping quarters.

Street Sign Visibility

In case a fire is started within your home, it is important to note the visibility of your street sign for those first responders who would search for it if a fire did occur. With the home address visible, there is less room for error and wasted time on the first responders’ parts.

Evacuation Plans

A great way to teach your family the importance of fire safety is to sit down and create an evacuation plan.

Evacuation plans teach us the best course of action for escaping a fire. When creating one, keep in mind the best routes for each room in the house. For the safest and most efficient routes, each room should have two potential exits to use in the case of escaping a fire. Ensure that each person in your household understands the routes available to them.

Candles and Appliances

As for day to day upkeep, remember to never leave candles burning when you are not present and to always turn off and unplug appliances that give off and conduct heat. These tasks can ease your mind and prevent fires from starting in your home.

Overall, making and practicing habits is an efficient defense against fires. Practicing proactivity by preparing for disaster is part of the solution for battling a disastrous accident.
