First Aid Kits

Everyone should have a first aid kit in their car and home. A FAK is the most basic form of preparedness and can help in a multitude of situations. A First Aid Kit can be fully customized to fit you and your family’s needs, you never know when you’re going to need it. Use this guide for help in buying (or building) your own kit.

The Essentials

Many items can be substituted and exchanged for others but there are a couple items that every kit needs:

Be aware that some of these items will expire, all unused items that have expired should be replaced. When building your kit, make a reminder on your phone or calendar to replace items when they expire.

Know how to use these items with bleeding control training or other first aid training. Your first aid kit won’t be helpful if you don’t know how to use it!

Customization

Every person is different, meaning they need different items prepared in case of emergency. For example, if you or a family member has a severe allergy, it’s important to keep antihistamine medicine and an epinephrine injector. If you or a family member has diabetes, it will be important to have glucose tablets in your kit. It is also helpful to put a note in your first aid kit that lists the address of your home and any other pertinent information in case someone needs to relay this to 911.
