National Public Health Week - April 5-11

Wednesday March 31, 2021

Every year during the first full week of April, communities around the country come together to commemorate National Public Health Week and the importance of public health by addressing problems that are critical to improving our nation's health issues. Every year, Public Health organizations work together to create a nationwide educational initiative.

These are the kinds of efforts that affect our people and communities' health and well-being. So everyone has a chance to live a long and healthy life, addressing the root causes of ill health and disease risk is critically important. These problems stem from the way we live, think, work, and play.

It is the child who is unable to walk to school due to the lack of sidewalks. It's the student who goes to school hungry and is unable to completely benefit from an education that will lead to a healthier and more prosperous adulthood. It's the family who can't seem to find affordable healthy food in their area.

Thankfully, we have options and ProPac can help. Together, we can create healthy communities and, hopefully, the healthiest country, if we concentrate on our society to ensure decisions are taken with everyone's health in mind. However, we'll need everyone's assistance to get there.

Find out how your state spends public health funds and how health impact evaluations are used to identify key public health problems in your region. Use social media to engage your public health colleagues and elected leaders on these issues. Encourage city authorities to promote parks, sidewalks, and bike lanes as part of a safe neighborhood design – and to finance initiatives to avoid unsafe living conditions. Keep up with what's going on in your school system to ensure that low-income students have their basic needs met so they can learn. Attend public meetings to raise concerns and get answers to questions.

Join ProPac in commemorating National Public Health Week 2021 and a growing campaign to make the United States the healthiest country in over a generation. Honor the power of culture, share collaborative ideas and promote the benefits of a strong public health system.

Public health is for the public good.
