ProPac, Inc: 35 Years in Business

Wednesday February 28, 2024

ProPac celebrates 35 years of supplying disaster preparedness and response equipment across the U.S. and around the world. On March 1st, 1989, Gordon King founded ProPac, Inc. in Charleston, South Carolina where Hurricane Hugo hit just 6 months later. Since then, ProPac has grown to become a leader in the disaster preparedness industry.

In the summer of 1993, ProPac created one of the first known “Disaster Preparedness Starter Kits” for the American Red Cross in Miami. Little did we know it would later become one of the most popular items in our inventory. A picture of the kits being handed out was printed on the front page of the Miami Herald and became one of ProPac’s first mentions in local news.

ProPac does business with many organizations like State and Local Emergency Management Agencies, Public Health Departments, Fire Departments, Community Emergency Response Teams, The Medical Reserve Corps, The Salvation Army, and many other NGOs, schools, and universities. Our motto is "Know Us Before You Need Us," and we continue to spread those words throughout the disaster preparedness community.

Our goal is to prepare and supply. Whether we work with government agencies or local organizations, preparedness and safety are our top priorities. From hygiene kits to flood clean-up kits to inflatable shelters and CERT gear, our mission is to provide, aid, and prepare against emergencies. Responsiveness and short turnaround time on orders enable rapid response to our customer needs, those who dedicate their missions, principles, and lives to help people in the most desperate and catastrophic times. We are honored to assist, supply, and serve in fulfilling a mutually successful goal of aiding those in need.

Starting at Wappoo Road with 5 employees, 1 computer, 0 cell phones, 0 shelves, and 0 forklifts, ProPac made a name for itself. Moving to Remount Road in Hanahan with 8 employees and a 6,920 sq. ft. space, ProPac continued growing, eventually needing a larger space. Next came, "The Fox," on Rivers Avenue with 13 employees. As time went on, ProPac's need for a larger space increased, leading us to Air Park Road with 20 employees and a 56,000 sq. ft. space, called "CandyLand."

ProPac's rapid growth led to a need for an even bigger location. Although still located on Air Park Road, ProPac currently functions out of a larger facility with over 20 employees and an impressive warehouse that ships domestically and internationally.

We are grateful for 35 years of service and look forward to continuing our mission of preparedness!
