Water Safety: Protecting Lives and Enjoying the Water
Water is an essential life resource as well as a source of fun and recreation. Water activities are a great escape from summer heat, from a dip in the ocean to swimming in the pool, and even floating on the lake.
However, prioritizing water safety can prevent accidents and protect lives. We’ve compiled essential information to ensure your safety in and around water.
The first step to being safe in the water is learning to swim. Being able to swim is a vitally important skill for everyone. Check with your local fitness centers for swimming classes or use the American Red Cross swim lesson locator. An important part of learning to swim is becoming comfortable with water. Accompanying basic swimming skills with the use of flotation devices can reduce the risk of drowning.
Second, do not swim alone. Regardless of your swimming abilities, swim with a buddy in case of emergencies. Exhaustion and cramps can occur while swimming, which can cause issues even for more experienced swimmers.
It is vital to be aware of your surroundings. Whether you are at the pool, beach, or lake, staying aware of your surroundings is crucial. Take note of all posted signs, flags, and warnings, and obey lifeguard instructions. Notice the water conditions like currents, tides, and depth before hopping in.
Stay alert regarding currents. Strong and swift rip currents can sweep you off your feet in seconds. If you get caught in one, do not fight it, and always swim parallel to the shore.
Furthermore, it’s important to know your limits. The sun can make you tired quickly, and paired with continuous exercise may lead to exhaustion. Be cautious of your limits while out in the sun. If you get too hot, ProPac’s Cool Down Kit can help you out.
Always remember to wear your sunscreen and stay hydrated! With high temperatures and increased perspiration, it’s easier to dehydrate in the heat. Keep hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and protective covering nearby to prevent sunburns and heat stroke.
When swimming in pools and at beaches with designated lifeguards, be sure to swim in the designated areas. You want to make sure you are visible to those on watch in case of an emergency. Avoid restricted areas as hidden dangers could be present.
Whether you’re kayaking, boating, swimming, or jet skiing, always wear appropriate safety equipment like a life jacket or a personal flotation device (PFD).
As always, keep a close eye on the little ones. Supervise children closely when they are near or in the water.
As for having fun in the water, ProPac’s waterproof pouches are the perfect addition to a beach day.
In case of an emergency, learn CPR and keep First Aid handy. The quicker proper care is provided, the better the chances of a positive outcome. ProPac’s Swift Water Rescue Kit, First Aid Kit, and CPR Pocket Mask can help during water emergencies.
Water activities provide endless fun and enjoyment, but it's crucial to prioritize safety. By following these tips and remaining vigilant, you can protect yourself and your loved ones while making lasting memories in the water.
