Severe Weather Season is Here
With Spring comes more than just April showers and May flowers, but also severe weather. Tornado and hurricane seasons are around the corner, so preparing for the worst is crucial. From flooding to fires to heat waves to heavy rain and strong winds, ensuring you and your family are ready for severe weather is vital.
The most common forms of severe weather in the United States are floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms. According to AccuWeather, around 1,300 tornadoes and 8-12 hurricanes are expected in 2024.
A good first step in emergency preparedness is education. Find out which natural disaster is most likely to affect your region. The American Red Cross has a great resource for finding data on regional weather. Once you know the severe weather most likely to affect you, the next step is to figure out the safest course of action to take during severe weather.
In many cases, sheltering in place is a safe solution. Shelter-in-place for flooding, hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and winter storms. Depending on the extremity of the situation, evacuations may be a safer option. Natural disasters most likely to cause evacuations include hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
In all cases, ensuring you have reliable information and direction from your local government is pertinent, and always have a disaster plan in place that you and your family fully understand. With the most severe weather disasters comes flooding. Be aware of your surroundings before, during, and after severe weather to keep yourself safe.
